This 1,200sf renovation/ expansion of a 1950’s bungalow includes the modernization of the kitchen, a master suite addition, plus the conversion of a detached garage into a home office. Designed and constructed on a tight budget, the use of economical materials did not result in a sacrifice of quality. Materials were chosen for their aesthetic value as well as sustainability and/or durability: 30-year asphalt shingle roofing, off-the-shelf cabinetry with granite counter tops, bamboo flooring to match the existing oak floors of the main residence, painted concrete floors and exposed oriented strand board wall sheathing in the home office, plus new energy efficient appliances and lighting fixtures. The use of vibrant colors and simple yet playful lighting solutions create a dynamic interior environment while new french doors, wood deck and stone patio create a strong visual and spatial connection to the exterior.
