This new ranch-style home in Palo Alto, California reinterprets the familiar California residential typology for contemporary living. Four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and an entertainment-oriented basement are organized within a design intended to fit comfortably within the surrounding neighborhood while establishing a distinctly modern character.

The architecture draws from the ranch house’s characteristic low profile and broad roof forms, simplifying them into clean geometries with carefully resolved details. Open living spaces reinforce the horizontal organization of the house and create strong visual and physical connections to the surrounding landscape.

A restrained exterior palette of gray plaster, clear-stained Western Red Cedar, and dark aluminum windows emphasizes the building’s forms while bringing warmth and texture to the composition. Large areas of glazing connect the interior spaces to the garden and bring natural light deep into the home.

Rather than reproducing a traditional ranch house, the design uses its proportions, rooflines, and relationship to the landscape as the basis for a contemporary interpretation suited to modern family life.
