Black Point Eco-Retreat

Designing for ecologically sensitive sites requires a thoughtful approach that balances environmental preservation with functional needs

Perched on a steep, wooded hillside near a protected wetland in Novato's rural Black Point area, this 2000-square-foot, two-story residence draws inspiration from its natural surroundings and vernacular structures. With a compact footprint to preserve existing blue oaks, the house and garage are elevated on stilts, minimizing disruption to the landscape while maximizing views of the wetland and Mt. Tamalpais. Inside, an open floor plan and generous glazing seamlessly merge interior and exterior spaces, creating a harmonious sanctuary in nature.
